If I run out of fuel I’m basically floating adrift in space, waiting for someone to lend me some, trade me some, or attempt to turn my beloved Mallard into scrap. With Lagardi on board I elect to jump into another Rock sector – he may be able to talk our way out of any sticky situations. The man spends far too much time around guns, he could do with a friend, albeit one made out of granite. I send “Lagardi” to the weapons room to keep Hutz company. Rockmen are slower than all the races, but are resistant to fire and have a 1.5x health bonus too. Breckon, probably used to strange aliens teleporting next to him on a regularly basis, does not react. If I destroy the ship they’ll all die anyway, so I agree to it. They send a message of surrender, offering one slave as tribute. Now I’m not the sort of man to let slavers just carry on with their trade.Ī volley from the dual burst lasers cuts a good chunk from their health. They offer us a deal, 46 scrap for a slave.

Just as I’m admiring my dashing good looks in the ship’s window, a Rock slaver ship jumps into view. No doubt tales of terror are spreading throughout the galaxy of the plucky little ship and it’s extraordinarily handsome captain. The Mallard is becoming a very worthy ship. I give Hutz a patronising pat on the head and let him get on with tearing through the rebel ship, which explodes in due course. The sturdy little weaponsmith has now improved the recharge time for all of my lovely laser beams and missile launchers. A trap! Curse those moss-covered geological traitors! As we fire at the rebels, there’s a little chime, and I notice that Hutz has levelled up. When we get to our destination a rebel fighter is waiting. I agree at any rate, and they opt to follow me through each beacon jump. A odd juxtaposition after just being showered with missiles and laser beams from a ship exactly the same. On the next jump I’m approached again by a Rock scout, this time asking for me to lead them through the sector. After a tough fought battle, in which my new engine upgrades prove their worth, the Rock ship is finally brought down. The pop-up indicates there’s no talking to them, so we engage straight away. It’s well armed and armoured, with two shields and four weapons. It isn’t long until I come across one of their ships, a scout. Rock space is intimidating before I even get going.
